Blushing Delight™ Urban Apple®

Malus x domestica ‘UEB 3727-4’

Description & Overview

Blushing Delight™ Urban Apple® is a columnar apple that is part of the Urban Apple® series as marketed in the U.S. It was developed by the late Dr. Jaroslav Tupey of the Czech Republic. It is marketed under a different name in Europe (‘Moonlight’). This variety produces green/yellow colored apples that develop a red blush when ripe. The fruit is juicy and sweet. The columnar form makes it advantageous for those who have little space for growing fruit trees.

Wildlife Value:

Apple trees are relished by deer, numerous small mammals, and insects.

Maintenance Tips:

Columnar apple trees will need to have some of the branches removed as the tree ages to increase sunlight thru the canopy. The growth is very much spur type so care must be taken to not let the spurs become so numerous that too many apples are produced which will result in poor size and color. Very little pruning required compared to dwarf or semi-dwarf apple trees. Thin the young apples to 6″ apart in mid-June to obtain best fruit size.

Pests/Problems:

Like all in this series, Blushing Delight™ Urban Apple® has resistance to apple scab. However, apples are prone to numerous insect and disease issues so following a preventative spray program or growing the fruits in bags (organic) is strongly suggested to obtain a quality fruit crop. Find a spraying guide and more information on Best Pesticides For The Home Orchardist.

Leaf Lore:

The Urban Apple Series is composed of 4 different columnar apples varieties (Tasty Red, Blushing Delight™, Tangy Green™ & Golden Treat).

Companion Plants:

Blushing Delight™ Urban Apple® must be cross-pollinated with a crabapple or different apple variety to produce fruit.
